What Was MK-Ultra?
MK-Ultra was a covert CIA program active from 1953 to 1973, designed to develop techniques for mind control and interrogation. It involved over 150 research projects across 80 institutions — universities, hospitals, prisons, and mental health facilities — most conducted without the knowledge or consent of the subjects.
The Methods
Experiments included administering LSD to unwitting subjects, including prisoners, mental patients, and CIA employees, to study its effects on behavior and susceptibility to suggestion. Other methods included hypnosis, electroconvulsive therapy, sensory deprivation, torture, and combinations of psychoactive drugs. Some subjects suffered permanent psychological damage. At least one died.
How It Was Discovered
In 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered most MK-Ultra files destroyed. A 1977 Freedom of Information Act request uncovered 20,000 documents that had been misfiled in a financial records building. The Legacy
