The Thought Experiment

In 1935, physicist Erwin Schrödinger devised a scenario to expose what he saw as an absurdity in the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. A cat is placed in a sealed box alongside a radioactive atom, a Geiger counter, and a vial of poison. If the atom decays, the counter triggers a mechanism that smashes the vial, killing the cat. If it doesn't decay, the cat lives.

Quantum mechanics says the atom exists in a superposition — simultaneously decayed and not decayed — until observed. By extension, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. The act of opening the box collapses the superposition into one definite outcome.

Why Schrödinger Was Horrified

Schrödinger didn't present this as a feature of quantum mechanics. He presented it as a reductio ad absurdum — a demonstration that applying quantum logic to macroscopic objects yields nonsense. A cat cannot be both alive and dead. Something was wrong with the theory, or at least with how people interpreted it.

The Many Worlds Alternative

Hugh Everett's Many Worlds Interpretation offers a different answer: there is no collapse. Instead, the universe branches. In one branch the cat lives; in another it dies. Both outcomes are equally real. The observer doesn't collapse the wave function — they become entangled with one of the branches.

What It Means for Reality

Whether you favor Copenhagen, Many Worlds, or another interpretation, Schrödinger's Cat forces a reckoning: observation is not passive. At the quantum level, the act of measuring a system fundamentally changes it. Reality, at its smallest scales, may not exist in a definite state until something interacts with it. That is not science fiction — it is the most tested theory in physics.
