The First Message

On January 4, 2012, an anonymous post appeared on 4chan: a plain image containing the text "Hello. We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image." The message, hidden using steganography, led to a Reddit thread. That led to a phone number. That led to a GPS coordinate. Each layer required different cryptographic, linguistic, and mathematical skills to unlock. Thousands of people collaborated worldwide.

The Scope of the Puzzle

The puzzle incorporated: PGP encryption, steganography, the Tor network, medieval Welsh language, references to the Mayan numerals, poetry from William Blake, number theory, the philosophy of the Liber Primus (a handwritten book in runic script that remains only partially decoded), and physical posters appearing on telephone poles in Warsaw, Seoul, Sydney, Miami, and seven other cities — posted simultaneously, days after the puzzle began. The coordination implied significant resources and global reach.

Who Is Behind It?

This remains unknown. Theories include intelligence agencies recruiting cryptographers and hackers, privacy-advocacy organizations, a private technology company, or an art collective. The puzzles demonstrate mastery of cryptography, number theory, esoteric literature, and operational security. Whoever created Cicada 3301 did not want to be found — and has not been. This is one of the most credibly mysterious events in the Cosmic Mysteries of the digital age.

The Liber Primus

The third and most recent Cicada puzzle (2014) led solvers to the Liber Primus — 58 pages of runes encoding an unknown text. As of today, only a fraction has been decoded. The book's philosophy, where legible, describes privacy, individuality, and resistance to centralized control as sacred obligations. Whether the remaining pages contain additional puzzle steps or are the puzzle's final destination is unknown. The book sits unread, in plain sight, on the internet — and no one can crack it.
