The Block Universe Theory: Time Is an Illusion
Past, present, and future all exist simultaneously. The "now" you experience is not special — it is just where you are in a four-dimensional block of spacetime.

Einstein's Eternalism
Special relativity dissolves the universal "now." Two observers moving relative to each other disagree about which events are simultaneous. This is not a measurement error — it is fundamental. The implication, taken seriously by Einstein himself, is that all moments in time exist equally and permanently in a four-dimensional block: the eternalist or "block universe" view. Your past is not gone. It still exists. You just can no longer access it.
The Psychological Present Is a Construction
The sensation of time "flowing" — of a present moment moving from past to future — has no correspondent in physics. The equations of general relativity, quantum mechanics, and classical mechanics are all time-symmetric: they work equally well run forwards or backwards. The felt sense of temporal passage is a product of memory, entropy, and neural processing, not a fundamental feature of spacetime. Free Will Under Eternalism
If the block universe is correct, your future already exists. The decision you will make tomorrow is already encoded in the four-dimensional structure of spacetime. This is a form of hard determinism so thorough it eliminates not just free will but the possibility of genuine novelty. Whether compatibilist accounts of freedom survive this is one of the oldest and most contested questions in philosophy.
The Arrow of Time Problem
If physics is time-symmetric, why does entropy increase in one direction? Why do we remember the past but not the future? The block universe does not answer this — it sharpens the question. The arrow of time must arise from boundary conditions: the universe had extremely low entropy at the Big Bang.
